Dr. Neil Shear

Dr. Shear is Prof. & Chief of Dermatology at the Univ. of Toronto Medical School. He graduated with a degree in Engineering Science from the same university in 1973 and a medical degree from McMaster Univ. in 1976. He completed training in both Internal Medicine and Dermatology recognized by the Royal College of Physicians of Canada and the American Boards. A research fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology, supported by the Med. Res. Counc. of Canada was completed at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Dr. Shear joined the staff of Sunnybrook Hospital in 1984 and is now the Head of Dermatology at Sunnybrook & Women's College Health Sceinces Centre, and the Director of the Univ. of Toronto Drug Safety Research Group. Dr. Shear founded the Drug Safety Clinic at Sunnybrook in 1985. He was the founding chair of CADRAC, the Cdn. Adverse Drug Reaction Adv. Cttee. of Health Canada. He has conducted clinical trials in dermatology, from first in human early pharmacology studies to large randomized trials of novel therapeutics in his role as V.P. of Research and Development (Dermatology) at Ventana Clinical Research. His research has been funded by numerous peer-reviewed agencies and the pharmaceutical industry. His main interest is in idiosyncratic drug reactions that involve the skin. He has published 200 peer reviewed papers and numerous chapters and abstracts. His clinical interests are diverse, from rosacea and camouflage makeup to autoimmune blistering diseases. Dr. Shear is a Past Pres. of the Cdn. Soc. for Clin. Pharm. and a recipient of the society's Distinguished Service Award. He is the Chair of the Cdn. Assn. of Prof. of Derm., Pres. of the Cdn. Derm. Fndtn. and a member of the prestigious Amer. Derm. Assn. He was the founding editor of the Cdn. Journal of Clin. Pharm. and is the associate editor of the Journal of Cutaneous Medicine and Surgery and deputy editor of Journal Watch Dermatology.
